Qingdao witnessed the finals of 2017 Global Marine Technology Entrepreneurship Competition (MTEC) cohosted by Shandong University and Qingdao Oceantec Valley Administration Bureau on November 6.In the end, the innovation and entrepreneurial project of Shandong University, "the first two-step truss hydraulic bolt type lifting device for self-elevating marine service platform" won the awards with other 5 teams from Germany, Britain, Canada and Shanghai.

Before, ten preliminary competitions were held with 120 teams in six countries, including 30 from Europe, 40 from North America and 50 from China. Fifty teams from home and abroad rowed over to the finals.In the final competition, the teams were divided into two groups for roadshows. And each group had 5 minutes for project presenting and 3 minutes for Q&A.The jury included scholars from Shandong University, investors from all walks of life, domestic and international business managers. They showed a strong interest in the projects, and put forward many targeted questions which were fully interpreted by the contestants.

The award-winning teams will receive a bonus up to 100,000 to 500,000 yuan provided by Qingdao Oceantec Valley for project start-up, and business counseling and support services provided byShandong University.Shandong UniversitySino-US University Technology Innovation Park, Institute of Marine Science and Technology, Institute of Science and Technology, Youth League Committee and School of Journalism and Communication of Shandong University participated in the organization and implementation of activities both at home and abroad. The competition also received strong support from the teachers and students in relevant colleges and alumni inside and outside the country.

2017 MTEC is by far one of the largest events of this kind in the world. It is co-organized by Shandong University Sino-US University Technology Innovation Park, Institute of Marine Science and Technology, COCOSPACE/COCOCAPITAL, attracting many high-quality innovation and entrepreneurship projects related to the sea from the world's marine high-tech areas. This competition combines the development orientation of Qingdao Oceantec Valley with focus on marine science and technology, intensive layout of high-end marine science and technology units, rich practical experience of innovation and entrepreneurship transformation and the advantages of cross-integration of marine subjects of Shandong University. The event closely centers on the theme of internationalized marine innovation and entrepreneurship. Positive responses from the entrepreneurs at home and abroad in the maritime field are received. This competition has effectively enhanced the influence of Shandong University in the field of technological innovation and entrepreneurship both at home and abroad. Cooperation with MIT, Dalhousie University, University of Toronto and the Helmholtz Society in Germany has been deepened and effective links with the world's top incubators and domestic and international high-tech enterprises facilitated, providing strong supports for further deepening cooperation and exchanges at home and abroad. The competition has also promoted the development practice of innovation and entrepreneurship in Shandong University, enriching related activities.
