108 Courses make the Summer School 2017 Colorful

This summer vocation, the SDU summer school aimed to cultivate talents who are inter-disciplinary, innovative and international, and set up 108 courses (programs) with the principle of "focusing on both theory and practice; endeavoring to innovate and inherit". The courses were classified into five modules separated into five genres including  innovation and entrepreneurship training, practice and open experiments, international courses for disciplines, general education and dual degree education, opened in seven campuses in both Jinan and Qingdao, covering more than ten fields, such as law, foreign languages, literature, economics, management, chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanics, material science and pharmacy.

SDU has always laid stress on the cultivation of interdisciplinary talents, and regarded summer school as an important supplement of regular semesters to allow all play to the advantage of a comprehensive university with a wide range of disciplines. For this summer school, dual degree courses and general education courses were jointly set up by the School of Economics, the School of Law, the School of Mathematics, the School of History and Culture and the School of Management, which enriched students' discipline background. The courses such as "Microeconomics", "International Economy", "International Marketing" and "Econometrics" developed by the School of Economics, "Assets Evaluation", "Accounting Information System" and "Security Investment Theories" set up by the School of Management, "Constitutional Law" and "History of Chinese Legal System" organized by the School of Law, "Introduction to the Cultural Industry" and "The Study of Chinese Folk Culture" organized by the School of History and Culture were all popular with students.

Programs for innovation and entrepreneurship as well as programs for practice and training were provided in the summer school. According to the international welding standard, for instance, the School of Material Sciences and Engineering organized programs including "Comprehensive Training of Numerical Control Processing" and "Series of Training Courses for International Welding Engineers", which invited noted experts to instruct the design of welding structure. The School of Mathematics and the Software College conducted a series of "Mathematics Modeling Trainings" for the National Mathematical Modeling Competition to be held in this September. The School of Information Science, the Engineering Training Center and the School of Control Science and Engineering all set up training courses for the National Undergraduate Electronic Design Competition. Such a learning style of combining learning and practice stimulated students' learning interests effectively and helped to improve their ability.

To broaden students' academic horizon, this summer school also gave international courses and programs, which emphasizing on the combination of basic researches and forefront areas of the discipline. Besides abundant academic reports and lectures, development activities were also included. The School of Computer Science and Technology opened the "Visual Computing" course, inviting James D. Foley, academician of the National Academy of Engineering, the United States, and professor from Georgia Tech, and Prof. Matthias Niessner from Stanford University to lecture in SDU, which enabled students to directly talk to well-known scholars and top experts in their filed. The School of Energy and Power Engineering invited Professor Kamel Hooman, Director of Queensland Geothermal center, and Professor Tien-ChienJen from the University of Johannesburg to lecture respectively for "Lectures on Frontier Sustainable Development" and "Modern Thermal Manufacturing technology". And the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences conducted "Advances in Pharmaceutical Science", inviting experts on emergency medicine and clinical pharmacy to give lectures. In summary, the international courses and programs developed themselves in the internationalization of teachers, content and instruction, endeavoring to cultivate international talents of high quality, high standard and high expectations.
