Following the visit to SDU of Cyril Dempsey, Director of Sea-Bird, and Wang Dequn and Meng Dapeng, Sea-Bird's agents in China ,on November 14th, 2016, Wu Qi visited the headquarter of Sea-Bird Scientific in Seattle and signed a cooperation agreement, and this recent discussion pushed the cooperation further by focusing on details of cooperation and plans for implementation. Both sides agreed that ocean sensors would experience a technological update every two decades, and many ocean sensors had been used for nearly twenty years and needed to be updated. New techniques in information science and in new material in recent years will make it technologically possible for innovation and breakthrough of ocean sensors, which is based on inter-disciplinary studies. They also discussed the scheme of establishing the International Research Institute of Ocean Sensors. After the meeting, they visited Qing Dao Science and Technology Bureau and reported to persons in charge their idea of establishing the Institute, which was positively received and supported.

Under the leadership of Professor Wu Qi, the Research Center of Ocean Sensors at the Institute of Marine Science and Technology of SDU is dedicated to applying new material and information science such as optoelectronic integration technology to the development of new ocean sensors, which is promising. Sea-Bird Scientific is the largest supplier of ocean monitoring equipment and scheme in the world. Both parties have made in-depth exploration and discussion in relevant fields and this cooperation will greatly promote the development of ocean sensors.
