From August 12 to 13, the 2017 International Conference on Brain and Brain-inspired Science was held in Qingdao.
President of Shandong University (SDU) Fan Liming, President of Ningxia Medical University (NXMU) Sun Tao, Vice President of SDU Zhang Yongbing, Vice President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) Luo Qingming attended the conference.
Fan stated in her address that the interdisciplinary construction of SDU had made substantial progress and she hoped that the experts present at the conference would give valuable advice to the construction and development of the brain and brain-inspired discipline, and jointly make greater contribution to the "China Brain Project". Meanwhile, SDU would strongly support the development of brain and brain-inspired disciplines.
Experts at the conference made deep-going academic discussions on the forefront and hot topics in brain science and brain-inspired researches from different aspects including the direction of the discipline, schemes of research methods, technical innovation, and achievement transformation. Rolf Bjerkvig, Professor of University of Bergen Norway and Guest Professor of SDU, introduced the experimental model of brain tumor study and its application in preclinical studies. Professor Luo Qingming from Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO) of HUST introduced the fluorescence Micro-optical Sectioning Tomography (fMOST). and received warm responses from the participants for its wide application prospect.
Professor Hrvoje Miletic, tumor pathologist from the University of Bergen, Professor Theodore Berger and Professor Dong Song from the University of Southern California (USC), Academician Wang Yutian from the University of British Columbia of Canada (UBC), Professor Aurora Martinez, Professor Frits Thorsen, and Professor Clive Bramham from the University of Bergen, and Doctor Stephanie Schipmann of neurosurgery from the Affiliated Hospital to the University of Munster of Germany presented advanced achievements combining their research field. Professor Li Xingang, Director of the Institute of Brain Science of SDU and Director of Qilu Hospital, introduced the research progress of "Qilu Brain Project" to the experts at the conference.
The research on brain science has always been a hot and difficult topic, which is the core and basis in this era of intelligence. Experts in Qilu Hospital of SDU initiated the brain research project of Shandong Province--the "Qilu Brain Project" in 2015 on the basis of learning and getting inspired from the developed countries' research plans. In March of 2017, to further strengthen the study on brain science, SDU upgraded its "Brain Science Institute" to "The Brain and Brain-inspired Science Institute of SDU", aiming at constructing a world-class "Brain and Brain-inspired" research institute and leading the development and innovation of the "Brain and Brain-inspired" studies, which would also make contributions to the "China Brain Project".
