Undergraduate Studies

In recent years, Shandong University has taken the improvement of the quality of undergraduate education as the most essential and urgent task. It has been carrying out in an all-round way the "3+2" Program for undergraduates, which consists of 3 "educations" and 2 "focal points". The 3 "educations"are "Top Students' Education", "General Education" and "Innovation Education". The 2 focal points are the Construction of Specialties and the Reform of Teaching Contents and Methods. It has further pushed forward the education model of "3 Acrosses+4 Experiences". The "3 Acrosses" refers to the practice that SDU offers students the opportunity of studying across the schools, across the campuses and across countries. The "4 Experiences"refers to the students' SDU campus experience, the second campus experience, the overseas experience and the social practice experience. All the above shows the importance and function of the undergraduate teaching and talent nurturing in building a first-class university worldwide.

 

Set up Taishan School and nurture top students in basic disciplines.


Founded in 2010 and headed by Peng Shige, a member of the Chinese Academy of Science, Taishan School is responsible for the educational program for top students. It relies on the schools of 5 disciplines: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and computer science, and aims at "enrolling first-class students, offering first-class teachers, providing first-class conditions, creating first-class atmosphere and setting up first-class management". It adopts the "3 Acrosses and 4 Experiences" educational model in which general education is combined with specialty education; science education is integrated into liberal arts education; the same importance is attached to both learning and research; and innovation is strengthened. The students of Taishan School follow a special educational system which is based on school-lodging, studying abroad, one-to-one tutoring and 8 year schooling. Taishan School offers a fertile land, a wide learning and research scope, and capital opportunities for the top students who are determined to be engaged in the research in basic disciplines and to realize their dreams of becoming worldwide first-class scientists.

 

Build "core courses" and construct an integrated general education system.


Based on the findings of the teaching reform and research in recent years, the Specialty Education Plan of SDU for Undergraduates has been revised in late 2009 to integrate the conception of general education into the students' education system. The Curriculum System of General Education of SDU consists of three layers: compulsory courses, core courses and optional courses. In 2010, SDU launched a mission of constructing 78 core general courses which involves seven domains: traditional Chinese classics, innovation and entrepreneurship, art and aesthetics, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering and technology. About 300 core general courses are going to be constructed in the coming 5 years.

 

Develop students' abilities of innovation and practice and push forward innovation education in an all-round way. SDU has set up a system of innovation education with the characteristics of "one goal, two aspects, three teams, four platforms and multiple layers". The System takes the policies for innovation education as the safeguard, the innovation education courses as the basis, the innovation education platform as the support, the contests of all kinds as the guidance, the innovation programs and innovation scores as incentive mechanism, the openness of labs as the complementation, and takes the system of undergraduates' tutors as assistance. In 2010, 10 innovation education platforms were built up. Currently there are 6 model experimental teaching centers at state level and 14 model experimental teaching centers at provincial level in SDU.

 

Establish talent-nurturing bases at multiple levels.


In SDU, there are six talent-nurturing bases at state level: the Base of Chinese Language and Literature, the Base of Mathematics, the Base of Physics, the Base of Chemistry, the Base of Bioscience and the Base of Biological Technology, which are named after Wen Yiduo, Pan Chengdong, Wang Ganchang, Deng Conghao, Tong Dizhou and Zeng Chengkui respectively. These people are all leading authorities in their fields and they all ever worked in SDU.


In order to push forward the nurturing of talents, SDU has set up the talent-nurturing bases at the university level and long-schooling experimental classes, which have become the highlights in the field of talent nurturing of SDU. Among them are Peng Shige Class (the Training Base of Financial Mathematics and Financial Engineering at the University Level), Hua Luogeng Class (cooperated with Chinese Academy of Science), Qilu Medical Class (the Innovation Experimental District of National Innovative Talents Training Model), the Experimental Class for National "Outstanding Law Talents Training Program", the Talent-Nurturing Base of "Literature, History and Philosophy" at the University Level, the Talent-Nurturing Base of Bio-medical Engineering at the University Level, the Talent-Nurturing Base of Industrial Ecology Talents at the University Level, and the Seven-Year Medical Program.
 
Promote the talent-nurturing model of "3 Acrosses and 4 Experiences".


The "3 Arosses and 4 Experiences" are advocated and pushed forward with major efforts on the basis of the concept of "endless resources, infinite space, multiple opportunities and great potentialities" and the concept of "complementation of advantages, sharing of resources, mutual benefit and common development". In 2010, 682 students of SDU were selected and exchanged to 24 other Chinese universities and over 400 exchange students from 28 other universities were accepted by SDU. Many undergraduates were sent to 19 countries and areas, 71 cooperative universities and 98 exchange programs. Among the exchange students, 465 were long-term (one semester or longer) exchange students; over 400 participated in short-term visiting schooling and summer school; 20 foreign exchange students and 96 foreign students studying for bachelor degree were accepted.

 

Open up internationalized excellent summer schools.


Since 2004, seven summer schools have been held successfully by SDU under the guidelines of "inviting masters abroad, being open to students of other universities, following academic frontiers, strengthening practice lessons, cultivating creativity and developing special skills"and with the aims of "excellence, creativity, opening-up and globalization". The Summer Schools recruits students from home and abroad with an opening attitude, promoting communication, cooperation and interaction between colleges, between colleges and society, and between colleges and the world. By means of masters' forum, opening labs, skill training, double degrees and subsidiary courses, social practice and visiting and exchanging home and abroad, the university extends learning contents and strengthens the construction of information platform, creating more opportunities for students'  knowledge learning, mutual communication and participation of social practice activities. Over 10,000 students attend summer school each year. The summer schools have produced considerable social influences and have won praises from the society.
