Recently, the Ministry of Education and the State Language Commission have announced the results of the Chinese Language Resources Conservation Award, commending outstanding groups and individuals since the Chinese Language Resources Conservation Program started in 2015. Professor Qian Zengyi and Professor Yue Lijing from the School of Literature of Shandong University won the individual awards. 100 scholars in total were honored nationwide.
Professor Qian is the leading researcher on Chinese dialectology at Shandong University. She has made significant contributions to the development of Shandong dialects, the study of Chinese dialectological methodology, and the popularization of Mandarin. As a major expert in the Chinese dialects census nationwide in 1950s, Professor Qian, at the age of 83, was appointed as the provincial chief expert in the Chinese Language Resources Conservation Program In 2015. Then she organized and conducted the investigation and research on language preservation of Shandong Province.
Professor Yue has undertaken five investigation tasks under the Chinese Language Resources Conservation Program. As a member of the core experts of this national program and the chief experts of Shandong province, she has done a large amount of organization, training, and coordination work, and engaged in the check and acceptance of nearly 40 dialects conservation sites in China.
The Ministry of Education and the State Language Commission launched the Chinese Language Resources Conservation Program in 2015, which is the largest language preservation program globally with the widest scope, the largest investment and the largest number of participants. Professor Qian was appointed as the provincial chief expert in the program, and Shandong University has become the major unit to be responsible of and undertake the program in Shandong province, which fully demonstrates the influence and status of SDU’s Chinese dialectology in the field of dialect research at home and abroad.
