On June 28, Samuel C.C. Ting, the Nobel Prize winner in Physics, famous scientist and honorary professor of Shandong University, was appointed as honorary Dean of the Institute for Advanced Technology of SDU. Fan Liming, President of Shandong University, attended the appointment ceremony and awarded the letter of appointment to Professor Ting. Wang Qilong, the Executive Vice-president, presided over the appointment ceremony. Vice President Cheng Lin participated in related activities.

At the appointment ceremony, Fan Liming mentioned in her speech that after Professor Ding’s first visit to SDU in 1994, he has guided the teachers and students of SDU to participate in the AMS (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer) project of the International Grand Science Program and work with top international scientists to tackle key problems and gain fruitful results for 25 years. Thanks to the proposal of Professor Ding, SDU established the Institute of Advanced Technology in November 2018. This Institute planned to start from the research of alpha magnetic spectrometer and then participate in and partially preside over the scientific experiments of alpha magnetic spectrometer, so as to become an important base for international dark matter research. It was also designed to gather a group of world-class scientists to work together to improve the scientific level and innovation ability of SDU. SDU will fully support Professor Ding's scientific research and team building. With the support of Shandong Province and all sectors of society, SDU will strive to build the Institute into a world-class academic research and exchange platform.

Professor Ding stated that the scientific research of AMS was of great significance for mankind to achieve the Mars and Sun landing in the future, and the contribution of the SDU team to the AMS project was universally recognized. In the past eight years, under the complex and ever-changing space of the universe, the scientific research ability and technology of the well-respected SDU team have been proved to be in advanced world level. He hoped that the research institute would gather a world-class team, engage in first-class scientific research, build a world-class research platform, and make new contributions to the development of human space science.

Subsequently, Professor Ding communicated with the teachers and students and asked them about their study and research. In the afternoon, Professor Ding Zhaozhong held a discussion on the direction and content of cooperation with the relevant personnel of the Thermal Science and Engineering Center of Shandong University and the Institute of Advanced Technology in Qianfoshan Campus.

During the visit, Liu Jiayi, Secretary of the Shandong Provincial Committee of the CPC and Director of the Standing Committee of the Provincial People's Congress, and Gong Zheng, Governor of Shandong Province met with Professor Ding and his entourage respectively.
