According to AGU (American Geophysical Union) News, Professor Shi Quanqi, from theSchool of Space Science and Physics at Shandong University, Weihai, will receive the 2017 Sunanda and Santimay BASU (International) Early Career Award in Sun–Earth Systems Science.
Shi will present a talk and will be formally presented with the award at the 2017 American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting, to be held from December 11 to 15 in New Orleans, USA. This award recognizes one young scientist in developing countries every year for the awardee's "outstanding contributions to research in Sun–Earth systems science that further the understanding of both plasma physical processes and their applications for the benefit of society".
Prof. Shi Quanqi is the leading scholar of the research team on "solar wind interactions with magnetospheres" from the Institute of Space Sciences, Shandong University. He has published more than 60 papers in top journals including JGR, GRL, Nature Comm, etc., and has given a dozen of invited talks on international conferences. The method introduced by papers from his team is recognized as the "Shi et al method" by the Cluster/MMS community as an optimal coordinate system and reference frame for the analysis of space plasma structures. His team also found a significant Solar wind entry window in the high-latitude terrestrial magnetosphere, which is considered "unexpected in the standard magnetosphere model".
The Early Career Award in Sun–Earth Systems Science was founded by the American scientist couple Sunanda and Santimay Basu in 2007. This is the second time SDU professors won this award. Prof. Chen Yao from the School of Space Science and Physics at SDU, Weihai, received the award when it was first granted in 2008.
