The 7th International Conference on Welding Science and Engineering (WSE 2017) in conjunction with 3rd International Symposium on Computer-Aided Welding Engineering (CAWE 2017), organized and hosted by Shandong University, was held in Jinan from October 18 to 20.

During the short opening ceremony, the Conference Chairman of the WSE & CAWE 2017 and the Chair of Sub-Commission “Quality and Safety in Welding” of International Institute of Welding (IIW), Prof. Wu Chuansong from the School of Material Science and Engineering of SDU, gave the opening speech. The Vice President of SDU, Prof. Li Shucai, extended warm welcome and heartfelt gratitude to all the participants from home and abroad on behalf of Shandong University. The Vice President and Secretary-General of Chinese Welding Society, Prof. Wang Linshu, delivered a speech of congratulations on the opening of the conference.

The WSE & CAWE 2017 conference hosted by the Institute of Materials Joining of Shandong University, was co-organized by the State Key Lab of Advanced Welding & Joining of Harbin Institute of Technology, the Joining and Welding Research Institute of Osaka University in Japan, etc., and sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc.

Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former Vice President of International Institute of Welding, Prof. Pan Jiluan from Tsinghua University, Member of Canadian Academy of Engineering, Prof. Chen Daolun from Ryerson University, Chair of IIW Commission “Resistance welding, solid state welding and allied joining processes”, Prof. Dos Santos from Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Gmbh , Chair of IIW Study Group “The physics of welding”, Prof. Tanaka from Osaka University, and Chair of IIW Select Committee “Automotive and Road Transport”, Prof. Rethmeier from BAM attended the conference.

After the opening ceremony, Dr. Murphy, the Chief Scientist from CSRIO Manufacturing in Australia, Prof. Zhang Yuming from the University of Kentucky in USA, Prof. Dos Santos from Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht GmbH in Germany, Prof. Tanaka from Osaka University in Japan, Prof. Mendez from the University of Alberta in Canada, and Senior Engineer Wang Haipeng, the General Manager from Tangshan Kaiyuan Robot System Co, Ltd. In China, gave the plenary lectures entitled "Computational modelling of three-gas mixtures in arc welding", "Real-time sensing and control of developing weld penetration through reflection vibration in GTAW", "Considerations on rivetless aircraft structures", "State-of-the-art research on welding process in Japan", "Minimal representation and correction factors: a modeling approach of high potential for practicing engineers", "Manufacturing and application of robot intelligent welding line for special container car frame", respectively.

The subject of this conference is "New Progress and Trend in Welding Science and Engineering". It included 18 parallel sessions held in 3 meeting rooms. In each session,internationally well-known experts at home and abroad gave the keynote lectures and invited lectures firstly, and then the oral presentations and discussions were conducted. 18 famous welding experts from Germany, USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Japan, Korea, India, and Chinese Taiwan made the keynote lectures. And the active front-line welding researchers at home and abroad gave the invited lectures.

Besides, 66 oral presentations and 66 posters, covered all the areas of welding science and engineering, were arranged during the conference. Totally, 320 experts, scholars, manufacturing engineers and graduate students attended the conference.

This conference provided a good opportunity for participants to exchange and discuss on the state-of-the-art in welding science and engineering and relevant fields, and promoted the research and development of materials welding and joining. It would exert positive influences on the implementation and construction of the world-class discipline for material science and engineering and improve the academic influence and notability of Shandong University.
