On September 5th, Times Higher Education (THE), the United Kingdom's leading publication, published the supplement Alma Mater Index: Global Executives 2013 ranks institutions by the number of degrees they have awarded to top of Fortune Global 500 companies. The Index shows the link between successful business career and a university’s reputation. Through researching the education history of CEOs of companies in the Fortune Global 500, this supplement could rank their alma mater based on CEOs’ degree-awarding institutions, degrees, total revenues of companies, and other public objective information. Data shows, 15 universities from Mainland China and 1 from Hong Kong SAR are among the top 100. China, with a total of 16, is only second to the US. Shandong University ranks 30th, which is the second highest ranking among Chinese universities.
There are 38 American universities in the index, making the U.S. the biggest winner. Mainland of China follows with a total number of 15, having cultivated 40 CEOs of companies in the Fortune Global 500 2013.
The Chinese Mainland universities are as follows: 13 Tsinghua University, 30 Shandong University, 42 China Europe International Business School, 47 Party School of the Central Committee of the CPC, 67 Southwest Jiaotong University, 69 Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, 73 Tianjin University, 77 Jilin University, 78 Zhongnan University of Economics and Laws, 82 Nankai University, 85 Tongji University, 87 University of Science and Technology, Beijing, 93 Wuhan University of Science and Technology, 94 Huazhong University of Science and Technology, 95 Harbin University of Science and Technology. Hong Kong Polytechnic University is also among the top 100. Nine universities from Japan, eight universities from France, five universities form Germany and four universities form the UK are in this list as well.
The top 10 universities in the world are: 1 Harvard University, 2 Tokyo University, 3 Stanford University, 4 Ecole Polytechnic, 5 HEC Paris, 6 ENA, Ecole Nationale d’Administation, 7 University of Pennsylvania, 8 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 9 Keio University, 10 Seoul National University.
Times Higher Education is an authoritative British magazine on higher education, known for its annual “world university list.” Fortune Global 500 is the most famous and authoritative list for evaluating large companies around the world. It is released once a year based on companies’ turnover by Fortune Magazine.
