Itakura Toru, President of Wakayama Medical University recently visited Shandong University with a delegation to participate in the celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of friendly exchanges between Shandong University and Wakayama Medical University. Xu Xianming, President of Shandong University, met with the delegation. Zhang Yun, Vice-President of Shandong University, attended the celebration and delivered a speech, which was the opening ceremony of the Academic Conference on Medicine and Nursing.

During the meeting, President Xu expressed his warm welcome to the delegation and expressed his appreciation to Wakayama Medical University for their support over the years. He expects both sides to strengthen friendly exchanges and explore the areas of cooperation based on their partnership over the last 25 years, in particular in the field of medical management of public health fields and public health policy research and so on. President Xu also introduced the SDU’s 110th Anniversary and the Centennial Celebration of the School of Medicine. He suggested both sides strengthen cooperation and work together to make contributions towards realization the goal of Shandong University becoming one of the world’s highest ranking universities. President Itakura congratulated the 25th anniversary of bilateral friendly exchanges, and hoped the bilateral exchanges could continue to promote the academic levels of both parties.
Zhang Yun made a comprehensive review of the positive results achieved by the two universities over the 25 years of exchanges in his speech. He said this celebration is not only a summary for the past close cooperation of the two universities, but also a new beginning of cooperation between the two sides in the future. He believed the two universities will make cooperation further in the future and achieve even greater results.
Itakura Toru reviewed the history of the cooperation and exchanges between Shandong University and Wakayama Medical University. He spoke highly of the positive cooperation and exchanges between the two universities. He also expects the cooperation between the two universities will continue and achieve even greater results in the years to come.
The former Vice-President of SDU Li Chengjun reviewed the cooperation agreement signed by the two universities in June 1986. He also expressed his pleasure and pride at the fruitful rusults which achieved by the two universities in the past 25 years and expected the younger generation will pass the friendship on in the future.
The academic symposiums on medicine and nursing were held separately in the sessions of School of Medicine and School of Nursing. During the stay, the delegation also visited the Qilu Hospital of Shandong University and the newly competed ward building. Furthermore, 16 professors from Shandong University and 11 professors from Wakayama Medical University gave academic lectures. The activities attracted a wide-ranging audience including the former Vice-President of Shandong University Yu Xiuping, the related members of staff at SDU International Office and Qilu Hospital, and teacher and student representatives from the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing.
In 1986, the former Shandong Medical University signed cooperation agreements with Wakayama Medical University. After it merged with Shandong University in 2000, the two universities maintained close cooperation. In 2002, the two universities signed new cooperation agreements. Over the years, the two sides have made great achievements in exchange visits of staff, scientific research cooperation, and student exchanges.
