Shandong University or SDU held an opening ceremony for freshmen on Sept 21 to mark the start of the new semester.

Fan Liming, president of SDU, emphasized during her keynote speech that the students are from the new generation which has kept pace with the development of the new era and urged them to preserve and promote the culture of SDU, assume responsibility as the builders and successors of socialism, and contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Fan also called on the student to keep the faith, uphold the spirit of patriotism, improve their practical capability and foster the spirit of seeking truth from facts.

Ma Dawei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and also an alumnus of the university, delivered a speech at the event. He shared his experience of studying in SDU and rising the ranks to become a key researcher in the organic chemistry sector. Ma noted that the university had helped him develop a diligent, earnest and indomitable spirit which led him to success.

In addition, the ceremony showcased the university's promotion video, a feature film on SDU's devotion in fighting the COVID-19 epidemic, and the deeds of outstanding undergraduates to give the freshmen a better understanding of the SDU spirit.

The event was followed by a welcome party that featured various performances.
