The Center for Teaching Advancement and Faculty Development of Shandong University (SDU) held an online lecture on Dec 14 that was themed on cross-cultural teaching ability.
Teachers from Dongseo University(DSU) in South Korea made presentations at the lecture. They used the cultural differences between China and South Korea as well as the South Korean teachers' concerns when teaching international students as examples of the differences in thinking and how to improve cross-cultural communication while teaching international courses.
Eun-Mi Lee, a teacher from the International College of DSU shared her teaching experiences in Turkey and talked about how to integrate into the local culture and get to know students' multicultural backgrounds.
She also demonstrated how to solve cultural conflicts with international students and put forward some suggestions for alleviating cultural conflicts.
Kwon Yekyung, a teacher from the School of Business of DSU, introduced the differences in the composition of different classes based on her experiences for teaching students from Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia.
She offered some suggestions for teaching and communicating with students from different cultural backgrounds.
In addition, she showcased a lesson preparation program especially designed to help foreign students understand the lesson better.
The international curriculum has increased requirements for the cross-cultural communication of teachers in colleges and universities, and it is recommended that teachers need to not only improve their professional abilities, but also consider the cultural differences of students in different regions to cultivate their good cross-cultural communication skills, said Lian Jia, associate professor of the College of International Education of SDU.
