A public opening day event of the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology was held at Shandong University's Qingdao Campus on May 29, showcasing the laboratory's key scientific and technological progress, as well as introducing life science to the public.
The event included five sessions, a theme reports on science, introductions of State key majors, a popular science competition, an exploration of the State key laboratory, and online campus tours.
Zhang Youming, director of the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology, touched on achievements in the "development of genome manipulation technology and application of Red/ET recombination engineering technology".
Hu Wei, deputy director of the laboratory discussed microbial technology, the laboratory, the vision of cultivating postgraduate students, the enrollment of postgraduate students, and the reasons for choosing the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology in details.
Twelve teams and individuals from six units competed in the finals of the popular science explanation competition, giving vivid and direct explanations on topics such as dual-carbon, biodiversity, penicillin, computational biology, virus invasion, and human defense.
During the exploration session, the audience was shown seven laboratories and six fascinating experiments performed by professionals and professors on topics of bacterial micro imaging, magic fungus, three-dimensional protein structure, and the mystery of microscopy.
The audience was taken on a virtual tour of the Qingdao Campus, which is home to the largest single library among Asian institutions, China's largest single university museum, and other major campus buildings.
Based on media, the event was simultaneously streamed live on "SDU microbial" video channel and Bilibili for seven hours, and received nearly 6,000 viewers and 16,000 likes.
