The awards ceremony of the 2022 China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM) was held at the central campus of Shandong University (SDU) on April 15.
SDU students Cao Jingwen, Luan Tiancheng and Kang Wenguang stood out among all undergraduates nationwide and received the Higher Education Press Cup award, which is the top award of the contest. This is the second time that SDU has gained this honor. Han Aolin, Sun Ruohan and Zhao Kaiwen from SDU's Weihai campus obtained the honorable title of Beitai Tianyuan Mathematical Modeling Star in the undergraduate group.

Luan from the winning team said the good performance was partly due to the reasonable modeling, accurate results, clear logic and rapid solutions to select a reasonable intelligent algorithm.
Han from SDU's Weihai campus said his team had been preparing for this competition for one year and nine months." Team members must be like-minded and have similar personalities in order to cooperate tacitly during the long period of preparation and intense competition."
Students all mentioned that they benefited a lot from SDU's mathematical modeling courses as well as the simulation training and thesis writing exercises under the guidance of their teachers.
Li Shucai, president of SDU and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, introduced in his speech at the awards ceremony that relying on its solid foundation of mathematics research, SDU boasts high-quality educational resources such as first-class disciplines andthe National Center for Applied Mathematics. The university has set up a team of tutors for mathematical modeling, built an innovation laboratory and boosted the integrated development of scientific research, teaching and competitions. SDU is exploring an innovative path that promotes teaching through competitions and mathematical modeling to cultivate top-notch talents.
Li also shared his personal experience of writing a doctoral thesis with experts, teachers and students. He said such experience made him realize the importance of combining engineering with mathematics in his subsequent researches. Li hopes that based on disciplinary advantages, SDU will continue to tackle major mathematical problems for national scientific and technological tasks and meet the urgent needs of regional development and enterprises.
