The Third National Games and 2023 Track and Field Games of Shandong University (SDU) kicked off on April 21. The university's president, Li Shucai, attended the opening ceremony and gave a speech.
The Athlete's March signaled the start of the ceremony as flag bearers carrying the Chinese flag, the school flag, and the school insignia marched past the podium. The competitors were then joined by the judges and athletes, who entered the arena uniformly and enthusiastically.
Li emphasized the university's recent efforts to strengthen sports education and moral development in his remarks. He said that the competitions serve as more than a recap of SDU's athletic achievements, but a platform for teachers and students to demonstrate their endurance, teamwork and determination while showing their physical and intellectual prowess.
Wang Zenghui, a 2021 graduate student, took an oath on behalf of all athletes by pledging to actively participate in the games and respect referees, opponents and the rules. Xiao Yuhui, a 2021 student from the School of Physical Education, pledged to provide fair, just and open refereeing on behalf of all referees.
The opening ceremony also featured various performers, including a martial arts demonstration of Man Jiang Hong (The Whole River Red), which showcased the students' commitment to serving the country and supporting the nation.
Following the ceremony, more than 2,000 participating teachers and students geared up for two days of intense competition in 53 sporting events, such as the 100-meter sprint, high jump, long jump, and shot put.
