The 2023 Hehe Civilization Forum themed "Diversity of Civilizations and Modernization" was held in Singapore on September 8.
Wang Xuedian,vice-president of the International Confucian Association andchair professor of Shandong University, presided over the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech about diversity of human civilizations.
"The diversity of civilizations is a profound conclusion drawn from temporal and spatial dimensions of civilizations. Dialogue and mutual learning are the most effective ways for different civilizations to interact and engage. Academic dialogue, in particular, holds greater theoretical and practical significance," Wang said.
China showcases the brilliance of civilization through its strong adherence to responsibility, collectivism, and harmonious coexistence within Chinese and Eastern ethical civilization, providing multiple options for the realization of modernization for all humanity, Wang added.
Wang also noted that he is looking forward to collaborating with scholars worldwide to contribute to the shared prosperity of civilizations by interpreting and creatively transforming ancient civilizations.
The concept of "harmony" originated from the East and embodies expectations of peace, harmony, amicability, and cooperation. It is a significant element of Confucian thought and a historical legacy of Eastern civilization, serving as a code for progress shared by all of humanity. The Hehe Civilization Forum provides a platform for exchange, dialogue, and mutual learning among different countries and diverse cultures.
The word "hehe" or "和合" in Chinese originated from Confucian thought, which means “harmony and unity”. It emphasizes a balanced coexistence between individuals, society, and nature. During the forum, experts and scholars from countries including Singapore, France, the United States, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, and China, engaged in discussions. Nearly 1,500 people participated in related activities both online and offline.
