Yang Chaoming, a deputy to the 14th National People's Congress and distinguished professor at the Advanced Institute for Confucian Studies at Shandong University, suggested that greater emphasis should be placed on traditional Chinese culture in schools in China during this year's two sessions.
Yang has long lived and worked in Qufu, Shandong province, the hometown of Confucius, where he has personally witnessed and participated in the preservation and promotion of fine traditional Chinese culture.
While significant progress has been made in integrating traditional Chinese culture into middle and primary school curricula in recent years, the emphasis on traditional cultural education varies across different regions, Yang said, emphasizing the need for a systematic educational plan related to traditional Chinese culture.
Yang proposed the establishment of mandatory courses on traditional Chinese culture in schools at all levels nationwide, along with the implementation of supportive measures to promote the subject. These measures could include increasing dedicated funds and recruiting full-time teachers.
Yang stressed that promoting traditional Chinese culture requires the involvement of families, schools and society at large. He also highlighted the need to establish practice and experiential centers to provide students with a diverse array of resources related to learning about traditional culture.
