The Universities for SDG 13 Award Greater China Finals was held at Tsinghua University on March 15.
The Buildings as Carbon Sinks Team from Shandong University, along with the A Kernel of Corn Team from Tsinghua University and Upcyclothes Team from Chinese University of Hong Kong, received the Winning Prize and earned the opportunity to compete in the global final as a representative of China.
The Universities for SDG 13 Award was initiated by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and SIEMENS GAMESA in 2021 aiming to encourage global youth to participate in Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13) Climate Action and propose more practical and innovative solutions to the global climate crisis.
Ten teams from different universities in China had the chance to participate in the Greater China Finals. They presented innovative solutions in fields related to carbon energy management, high-value waste utilization, and natural resource conservation.
The members of the Buildings as Carbon Sinks Team are from the School of Energy and Power Engineering at Shandong University. Their project focused on integrating building ventilation with carbon capture and utilization systems, aiming to reduce the energy consumption of CO2 capture, improve indoor air quality, and utilize the generated fuels to power the building itself.
In recent years, Shandong University has been dedicated to nurturing talent to serve the nation's "dual carbon" strategy and provide robust support for graduate and undergraduate students looking to engage in innovation competitions.
