On Oct 9, Li Shucai, president of Shandong University, met with a Swedish delegation led by Annika Östman Wernerson, president of Karolinska Institutet, one of the world's foremost medical universities in Sweden.
During the meeting, Li lauded the more than 20 years of academic cooperation between the two universities in the medical field and their joint cultivation of over 100 students.
He expressed hopes that both universities would fully explore the potential for medicine-engineering interdisciplinary cooperation, promote the innovative integration of medical and engineering disciplines, and strengthen the joint cultivation of students and two-way postdoctoral exchanges.
By further establishing a high-level research platform and deepening comprehensive cooperation, the two universities would help promote Sino-Swedish exchanges and enhance the well-being of the people of both countries, he said.
Wernerson acknowledged Shandong University as an important partner of the Karolinska Institutet in China, especially through the eight-year joint medical student training program, which has provided a strong platform for the younger generation to learn about history and uphold friendship.
She looked forward to further leveraging the platform of joint research in translational medicine to deepen pragmatic cooperation, exploring medicine-engineering interdisciplinary research, and working together to address common health challenges faced by humanity.
Following the meeting, Wernerson delivered a presentation on the globalization of higher education from the perspective of Karolinska Institutet.
During the visit, the delegation held discussions with various departments at Shandong University, including the School of Materials Science and Engineering, the School of Crystal Materials, the School of Software, the School of Mechanical Engineering, and the Cheeloo College of Medicine.
Karolinska Institutet is a world-renowned medical university, often referred to as the "cradle of the Nobel Prize in Medicine." Shandong University and Karolinska Institutet signed a cooperation agreement in 2003, jointly established laboratories for cardiovascular, oncology, global health, and stem cell research in 2014, and set up a translational medicine cooperative research platform in 2020.
