In a significant move to contribute to the development of China's western regions, Shandong University has established research institutes in Gansu Province and Xizang Autonomous Region, reaffirming its commitment to serving the nation's goals of becoming a powerhouse in education and technology.
Gansu and Xizang are pivotal regions in the implementation of the national strategy for the development of China’s western regions. Shandong University has long maintained close ties with them, actively engaging in communication and collaboration.
The establishment of research institutes in Gansu and Xizang marks a crucial step forward for Shandong University in its efforts to support the national strategy.
In August, the university's Party Secretary Ren Youqun and its president Li Shucai visited several universities in Gansu and Xizang respectively, and signed strategic cooperation agreements and memorandums of understanding with institutions such as Lanzhou University, Lanzhou University of Arts and Science, Lanzhou City University, Northwest Normal University, Xizang University, and Xizang Agriculture and Animal Husbandry University.
The research institutes established by Shandong University serve as bridges for scientific research and industry collaboration. The university is implementing the terms of cooperative agreements, sending high-level research teams for collaborative exchanges, promoting the implementation of high-quality projects in Gansu and Xizang, and facilitating the deep integration of education, innovation, talent, and industry chains to support the high-quality development in these regions.
The Shandong University Gansu Research Institute focuses on key industrial layouts in Gansu, engaging in scientific research innovation and technological development. Projects such as saline-alkali land improvement and high-value conversion of straw using synthetic biological technologies have been successfully implemented, contributing to efficient straw-to-sugar conversion and enzyme production.
The Shandong University Xizang Research Institute is the first physical research institution operated by a university in the country, focusing on stability, development, ecology, and environmental protection. Over 100 researchers from Shandong University are currently stationed in Xizang at altitudes exceeding 4,000 meters, tackling technical challenges in areas such as water hazard detection and control, intelligent construction, green bio-manufacturing, high-altitude health, and engineering medical support.
