Shandong University researchers Yu Haohai and Chu Daping were recognized on the list of 2025 Optica Fellows by Optica, formerly known as the Optical Society of America (OSA), on Jan 30.
Yu Haohai, director of the Institute of Crystal Materials Shandong University, was listed among the 2025 Optica Fellows for his theoretical and experimental contributions in the fields of laser and nonlinear optical functional crystals, including crystal growth and optics.
As a recipient of prestigious recognitions such as the National Leading Talent, Shandong Outstanding Young Fund, and the Humboldt Research Fellowship, Yu has made significant contributions to the field. He collaboratively proposed and experimentally verified theories on multi-phonon coupled laser radiation and added periodic phase, developing functional crystals and devices for key wavelengths with successful industrial applications in fields like healthcare and displays.
Chu Daping, chair professor at Shandong University and tenured professor at the University of Cambridge, UK, was named a 2025 Optica Fellow for his seminal contributions to display devices and broader impact on industrial applications.
As a Chartered Physicist and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Chu specializes in high-brightness multi-stable reflective color display devices, as well as research on holographic spatial light modulators applied in projection, lighting, and telecommunications, sandwiched electrically active metal foils, and flexible printable electronic technologies.
Optica, founded in 1916 as the Optical Society of America and renamed in 2021, is an authoritative international academic organization in the field of optics. The selection of Optica Fellows is based on achievements in research, business, education, and engineering, as well as outstanding contributions to the Optica community. The 2025 class of Optica Fellows includes 121 experts from 27 countries and regions.
