A group of 43 teachers and students from the School of Mathematics at Shandong University (SDU) recently took part in anacademic summer program at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).
The program focused on four areas: machine learning, mathematical modeling, deep learning, and data analysis.
Faculty members from PolyU's Department of Applied Mathematics delivered lectures and held discussions on topics including large language models, reinforcement learning for decision-making under uncertainty, optimal portfolio management, statistical causal inference, quantum computing, and power system optimization.
Through a series of courses, students developed a comprehensive understanding of the mathematical principles and practical applications of stochastic control, causal inference, neural networks, and quantum computing. The classes conducted in English also enhanced their academic communication skills.
Following the courses, the participating SDU group hosted an alumni discussion focused on study planning, supervisor communication and cross-cultural adaptation. Students also shared their perspectives on course content and academic learning with peers from other top Chinese universities, including Beihang University (BUAA) and Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU).
The program combined advanced mathematics courses with cross-cultural exchange, helping students strengthen their academic foundations and broaden their global horizons. Additionally, it promoted further academic collaboration between SDU and universities in Hong Kong.
