Shandong University's (SDU) School of Foreign Languages and Literature held a seminar on Sept 5 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Department of Spanish Language and Literature and discuss the future development of Spanish education in the digital and AI era.
Over 50 alumni returned for the event, which also brought together scholars and representatives from universities, research institutes, government agencies and other organizations.
Discussions focused on the use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in language teaching, interdisciplinary education, area studies, and cross-cultural exchange. Participants explored how Spanish education could shift from knowledge transmission toward developing students' practical, interdisciplinary and communication skills.
A key topic was SDU's "Spanish + International Communication" module, which combines Spanish-language education with international communication. Participants discussed how the university’s broad disciplinary strengths could support this interdisciplinary model and better prepare students for international communication involving Spanish-speaking countries.
Established in 2006, SDU's Spanish program is among the first undergraduate Spanish programs in Shandong province and has developed into an important base for Spanish teaching and research in East China.
The seminar also provided a forum for alumni to share ideas on curriculum development, interdisciplinary education, area studies, and the program's future direction.
Looking ahead, the program aims to further incorporate digital technologies and interdisciplinary approaches into its curriculum. Its goal is to cultivate well-rounded Spanish-language professionals equipped with global perspectives and cross-cultural communication skills.
