Abstract:Inflation is one of the central macroeconomic variables of interest to economists for several reasons including its impact on equity, its redistributive effects, the intertemporal effects it has on investment and savings decisions, and its relationship with growth, interest rates and unemployment. It has naturally become a primary target for making policy decisions yet its behavior has changed dramatically over time which has complicated policy-making. In this talk, I bring together research characterizing the evolving nature of US inflation, its changing relationships with real and nominal variables as well as changes in the permanent and transitory components of inflation and inflation volatility.
