About Us
Shandong University (SDU), one of the top universities in China, is located in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province, about one hour flight south of Beijing. College English Department (CED) is a branch of the SDU’s School of Foreign Languages and Literature. CED offers English courses to students of non-English majors at various levels throughout SDU’s fives campuses in Jinan and helps the students in improving their all-around English abilities. In addition to accomplishing its heavy teaching responsibilities, the CED faculty also conducts high-level research projects in teaching methodology and has played a major role in local and national research programs. Among its hardworking and enthusiastic faculty members, about two third of them have overseas study or working experience and many are recipients of university, provincial and national awards and honors for excellence in teaching and research.
CED values the important contribution of its foreign teachers and recognizes them as a unique and indispensable component of SDU faculty. Our foreign teachers have been winners of the Excellent Teaching Award by Shandong Department of Education, Qilu Friendship Award by Shandong’s Provincial Government and the National Friendship Award by the State Administration of Foreign Experts.
Job Introduction
Full-time English instructors are needed from September, 2012 to June 2013.
Courses taught by foreign English instructors include:
1.Oral English to undergraduate medical students.
2.General English to non-English major students at doctoral and master levels.
Teachers perform 16 hours or equivalent over five days a week (mon-fri) with public holidays excluded.
Job Specifics
Undergraduate Level
Oral English instruction to first and second-year students majoring in clinical medicine.
Each week teachers will give similar lessons to 5 - 7 groups, with 40-50 students in each group. Each lesson lasts about 110 minutes with 10 minutes break in between. The academic year includes 2 semesters, each covering 16 weeks in-class, and an exam week. The aim is to teach students listening and speaking skills to enable them to communicate more effectively in English, as well as enhance their understanding of western culture.
Teachers are expected to complete the lessons in the provided textbooks over this period of time. In addition, they should also allow for tutoring hours for students after class, usually 2 to 4 hours a week. All students have already undertaken more than 5 years of English study, which gives them an intermediate level.

Postgraduate Level
General English instruction to postgraduate non-English majors.
Masters or doctoral degree candidates who have been formally assessed to have an intermediate or high-intermediate English level. The course’s purpose is to provide an opportunity for students to improve their language skills, focusing more on academic speaking and writing so that they can communicate more effectively in both academic and professional environments.
Teachers will give lessons to 7 or 8 groups of students each week. In addition, they are expected to deliver 1 or 2 public lectures on the chosen topics each semester and participate in a few English activities organized by the students. Teachers should use the required textbooks in teaching, but have quite a bit of freedom and flexibility in designing classroom activities.

Job Requirements
1. Native English speakers, aged under 60 and healthy, with Master’s degree or above, minimum three-year experience in teaching English as second/foreign language or related subjects to adult students at college or university level, TEFL/TESOL certificated, are preferable.
2. Independent or exchanged University faculty on sabbatical leave is most preferable.
3. Energetic, enthusiastic, communicative and cooperative.
4. Patient, honest and hardworking with strong desire to help.

* Copy of highest degree earned and/or TEFL certificate
* Two letters of reference from current employer and colleague
If the applicant is working in Mainland China with a Z visa
* Copy of valid Foreign Expert Certificate (Work Permit)
* Copy of valid Resident Permit
* Letter of Release from International Office, or similar office, of current employer
Benefits and living conditions
Candidates with a two semester contract shall receive the benefits package as below.
1. Salary – Monthly salary ranging from 5000 to 6500(RMB) according to applicant’s educational background, teaching and training experience.
2. Accommodation – Free Accommodation furnished with a private bathroom and kitchen. Accommodations are assigned for convenience of work as well as availability.
3. Travel – A round trip flight of economy class between home city and Jinan.
4. Health insurance – Teachers are required to be covered by proper health insurance. It is strongly recommended that foreign instructors come to China with extra health insurance that covers the cost for emergency, hospitalization as well as treatment for acute diseases. The Health Insurance Plan for Foreign Teachers designed for foreigners working in China is available and cost is borne by the university.
5. Other benefits- a paid winter vacation for a two semester contract; Free heating, internet access and digital TV Service; Travel allowance of 1100 yuan for each semester; Free pickup service in Jinan for first arrival and departure when not renewing the contract of employment; Organized cultural activities and excursions in and out of Jinan during the year.
