Abstract:
During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Yangzhou attracted many literati to live or do business. Their ways of earning their living present different forms of expression, or rely on their own skills, such as teaching disciples, selling paintings and calligraphy, divination, etc. for profit and self-support, or locating traces, relying on wealthy families, formation between literati and wealthy families A close interactive relationship has been established, but some "variations" have also appeared. Although the literati's business involves many fields, they especially focus on the salt industry. There are also various ways of doing business, either assisting people to do business, or directly participating in business, and some even combine the two ways of doing business. The reason why literati participated in business was either because they failed to get a job, or forced by their livelihood, or influenced by their elders, or their ideas began to change, and so on. The scholars of Yangzhou also played an active role in literary creation and dissemination.
