Abstract:
Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMSs) are fantastic geometric objects that combine the beauty of bubble films and crystals. They are used in nature sciences as a model for the ubiquitous periodic bicontinuous structures. Physicists, chemists, and material scientists made significant contributions on TPMSs since the 1970s, while mathematicians fall far behind to provide rigorous treatment ... until recently. In my talk, I will review this interdisciplinary history, as well as recent mathematical progress on the topic. In particular, we have discovered many new TPMSs, and have improved the gluing techniques for minimal surfaces (including but not limited to TPMSs).
