Abstract:
Liquid crystals are states of matters featured by local anisotrophy typically generated by rigid molecules. The description of local anisotrophy leads to distinctive ingredients in liquid crystal models. We discuss the following topics: symmetry, order parameters, free energy, relations of molecular parameters and coefficients in the models, hydrodynamics, entrophy term and closure approximation. In particular, the most computationally challenging problems always involve the entrophy. We propose an elementary-function substitution of the original entrophy, called the quasi-entrophy, that is prospective in resolving these problems.
