Abstract:
Matroids are beautiful and important objects which lie at the interface ofcombinatorics and algebraic geometry, and problems in linear representability tend to be among the oldest and hardest in matroid theory. In this talk, we will first review some basic notions of matroids and their generalizations to other Coxeter types, and then define the F1-algebras, which are ring-like algebraic structures where the addition is no longer a binary operation. We then develop algebraic and algebro-geometric tools for understanding matroids and their generalizations as points on the Grass-mannians over some specific F1-algebras. This will be an overview of works of Matt Baker, Nathan Bowler, Oliver Lorscheid, and my joint works with Matt Baker and with Donggyu Kim.
