Abstract:
Prof Finn Werner is a tenured professor of molecular biophysics at University College London, he received his academic training in Denmark (University of Copenhagen) and in the United Kingdom (Imperial College London). After working at Finsen laboratoriet and the Thrombosis Research Institute, he started his independent research team at UCL with an acute interest in how cells control the release of biological information, and the origin and evolution of life. His research is focused on gene expression in Archaea, and more recently the African Swine Fever Virus. His team, the ‘RNAP laboratory’, is using a multidisciplinary- and multiscalar approach to illuminate transcription mechanisms and regulation by characterizing the structure and function of RNA polymerase and factors in vitro, and their dynamic genome-wide distribution and transcriptome output in vivo. By comparing distinct transcription systems, he tries to learn about their evolutionary origin and their functional adaptions to understand the selection pressures that have shaped modern life as we know it.
