Abstract:
Over the last 100 years, life expectancy has doubled in almost all regions of the Globe. Innovation in clinical therapies, biomaterials, prostheses and implants saved and prolonged the lives of millions every day. Today, advanced manufacturing techniques, nano-biotechnology, nanomaterials and surface modifications provide new insights and open undreamed doors to future challenges that may bring additional impact to Human quality of life worldwide.
In this talk, we will merge years of experience in materials science and engineering research applied to Health, and the outcomes of numerous successful and unsuccessful projects in research-development and innovation with companies worldwide to present a rather personal vision of the future of the field of biomedical engineered materials. Creative strategies for modifying and engineering the surface and the interface of biomaterials, including metals, polymers from natural and synthetic sources, will be discussed. The unique potential of low-pressure low-temperature plasma surface modification will be detailed. The overall aim of how far innovation can bring tomorrow solutions for Health, including therapeutics, reparative and regenerative medicine will be outlined. Costs for patients and burden for the Society will be critically discussed. Finally, applications for patients will be emphasized, including biologically active-based, biomimetic, low-fouling, bactericidal, and antiviral coatings.
