Abstract:
Macdonald polynomials, introduced in 1988, have profoundly influenced symmetric function theory and have appeared in combinatorics, representation theory, and geometry. In this lecture series, I will give a brief introduction to the theory of Macdonald polynomials, with a focus on Macdonald's original approach. We will discuss the necessary background on classical symmetric functions and two illustrative specializations: the Hall-Littlewood and q-Whittaker functions.
