From November 26th to 28th, Associate Professor Vasundara Venkateswaran, Director of the Summer Undergraduate Program, Institute of Medical Science at the University, Toronto, Canada, together with Dr. Venkateswaran Subramaniam from the St. Michael's Hospital visited the School of Medicine (SOM), Shandong University for academic and relevant collaboration.
The two specialists held lectures titled “Diet, Lifestyle and Prostate Cancer: Mechanisms of action and implications for chemoprevention” and “Role of CD44 in human colon cancer and suppression using gene therapy”, which demonstrated their achievements and astute observations in the field of prostate cancer and breast cancer. They also engaged in discussions with staff and students from SOM.
Furthermore, the two specialists also had discussions with officials from SOM and SDU Department of International Affairs, exchanging ideas on how to expand the cooperative programs between both Schools of Medicine under the frame of the inter-collegiate agreement between Shandong University and the University of Toronto. This also included assisting SOM in applying for the Undergraduate Overseas Study Scholarship issued by the China Scholarship Council.
During their visit, the Associate Professor Vasundara Venkateswaran held a presentation on Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) which was sponsored by the Institute of Medical Science. During the presentation, she elaborated programs for masters and doctoral students and the aim of SURP. At the end, she provided detailed answers to the questions raised by SOM students.
The presentation was extremely welcomed by the students. The SOM has been sending students to participate in SURP since 2010, which has benefited over twenty students until now.
