Wayne O’Neil, noted Professor of Linguistics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), recently came for a two-week visit to Shandong University’s Foreign Languages and Literature School. He gave lectures and took part in several academic activities.
Prof. O’Neil is a famous international linguist and served as the Dean of Linguistics and Dean of Literature at MIT for many years. He came to SDU as a Mobile Post Distinguished Teacher this time. His lectures centered on the newest developments in linguistics and the protection of endangered languages and so forth. During his visit, he also had various discussions with teachers and students of SDU’s Foreign Languages and Literature School on linguistics.
It was the first time Prof. O’Neil had visited SDU in 28 years. In 1984, Prof. O’Neil taught in SDU’s Foreign Language and Literature School and was appointed as the visiting professor of SDU. He has kept the school badge, his employee’s card and the letter of appointment from that time. He still has fond memories of the campus, colleagues, and students of SDU.
This time, his wife, Mrs. Amy Maya Honda, visited SDU as well and gave a series of lectures. She obtained her PhD in education from Harvard University, and is now an associate professor of Wheelock College. Her main research area is the development in linguistics, language teaching and so forth.
