The majestic Mount Tai stands in celebration of this flourishing era, and the Yellow River surges singing songs of praise. This October of 2011 finds Shandong University celebrating its 110th Anniversary. On this occasion, we would like to extend our greetings and gratitude to all the experts and scholars, leaders and friends of all circles, who have supported the construction and development of Shandong University for all these years. We also would like to extend our warm regards and best wishes to all the alumni all over the world.
Shandong University is one of the oldest and prestigious universities in China. It grew out of the Shandong Metropolitan University approved by the emperor in the Qing Dynasty in1901. Beginning enrollment in the same year when it was established, the University is the second national university established after the Imperial University of Peking in the country and is also the first national university to enroll students in China. The establishment and enrollment of the university aroused strong repercussions in China. Its university charter, the first of its kind in China, which the court decreed all other provinces take as references in 1901, not only lay the foundation for Shandong University to run the university according to the charter for over one hundred years, but also set an example for emerging higher education in China at that time, leading to the birth of metropolitan universities all over the country and making contributions to the emergence and development of Chinese modern university education.
For 110 years, Shandong University shared the weal and woe with the Chinese nation. Since its establishment in 1901, Shandong University, rooted in the Qi and Lu cultures and replenished by efforts of generations, has experienced several period of development, being Shandong Metropolitan University, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University, Shandong University and the new Shandong University today which grows out of the merger of Shandong University with Shandong Medical University and Shandong University of Technology. In 110 years, generation upon generation of the people in Shandong University sticking to the principle to "Reserve talents for the world, seek prosperity for the nation" and have been offering their services to their motherland. They have produced one after another tales on talents training, have composed numbers of glorious chapters in exploring the knowledge and have set good examples for academic and scientific development. In more than 100 years' time, Shandong University has produced more than 400,000 talents for the nation. Large numbers of learned scholars and backbones of the nation have taught or studies here, among which are famous writers Wen Yiduo, Lao She, Liang Shiqiu, Shen Congwen, Hong Shen, You Guoen, Wang Tongzhao, Lv Ying, Feng Yuangjun, Lu Kanru, Gao Heng, Xiao Difei, historians Gu Jiegang, Zhao Jibin, Yang Xiangkui, Huang Yunmei, Zheng Hesheng, Tong Shuye, Zhang Weihua, Wang Zhongluo, Zhao Lisheng, Chen Tongxie, medical scientists Hou Baozhang, You Jiajun, Gong Naiquan, Zhang Huiquan, Zhao Changlin and Sun Hongquan; biologists Tong Dizhou, Zeng Chengkui, physicists Wang Ganchang, Shu Xingbei, mathematician Pan Chengdong, chemist Deng Conghao, economist Xue Muqiao; mechanics expert Liu Xianzhi, combustion engine expert Ding Lvde, and Luo Rongheng, marshal of the PLA, Zhao Taimou, Yang Zhensheng, Huang Gang and Cheng Fangwu, educationists, Qian Mu , Ji Xianlin, erudite in Chinese studies, Luan Diaofu, a learned scholar in Mozi studies, and Zang Kejia, a poet.
In the 110 years' time, Shandong University has formed a profound cultural foundation, has built a persevering Shandong University spirit and a distinctive Shandong University style of ''resoluteness and simplicity'', and has nurtured a higher and innovative pursuit of higher education. Entering the 21st century, the merger of Shandong University, Shandong Medical University and Shandong University of Technology has marked a new period in the history of Shandong University. At this new starting point, Shandong University takes as its own commitment to "shoulder social responsibilities, dedicate to academic boom, cultivate backbones for the nation, serve social development, explore scientific truth, lead cultural enlightenment and realize the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" and set its goal to building a top university in the world. Shandong University will carry out its internationalization strategy, talents strategy and educational innovation strategy to define the moral, ideological, creative and distinctive university essence. Shandong University will also take the lead in innovating the running model of the university by establishing a Qingdao Campus and forming a "Shandong University System" with campuses in Jinan, Weihai, and Qingdao of Shandong Province.
The 110th Anniversary is a milestone for Shandong University. Ten years back, the University celebrated its centennial anniversary. Ten years ahead, the university will be 120 years old. So the 110th anniversary will be an occasion building on the past and preparing for the future. The University will seize the opportunity of this anniversary celebration to promote the spirit of the National Conference of Education and implement the Outline of the National Medium- and Long-term Program for Education Reform and Development. It will inherit the fine legacies, draw past experiences, make concerted efforts for all-round development, and speed up the construction of a world-class university. The 110th anniversary will focus international and high-level academic activities. Shandong University will, by holding these events, promote the fine legacies of the University and explore ways for scientific development. Through the celebration events, the University will strengthen its exchanges with universities all around the world, keep closer ties with the alumni, expand social influence, earn support from more people, generate more academic resources, thus enhancing the process of internationalization and all works of the university. Through the anniversary celebration, the University will, under the new situation, with the new task, the new target, and the new requirements, unify thoughts, and consolidate the determination in building Shandong University into a world-class university. During the Anniversary, the University will hold a series of academic and memorial activities. We welcome the concern and support from all circles of the society and would like to extend our earnest wish that the alumni could meet at the Alma Mater and join in the celebration events to share with us your ideas for the further development of Shandong University.
