On May 25th, in the Science Hall of Central Campus, the 7th Shandong University English Host Talent Contest ended in another big round of applause from around 400 spectators. The Contest, held by the SDU English Broadcasting Station, featured Chinese contestants showcasing their incredible oral English. This year, the contest featured 11 contestants from different majors competing to be crowned the “host” champion.
The event opened by Contestants presenting their tremendous talents in singing, dancing, dubbing and so on, much to the delight of the audience. The students each opened by showing off a talent of theirs, with an Arabic dance, traditional Chinese instruments and a trumpet player just some of the talents performed by the contestants.
The competition heated up in the third round when only six contestants remained. With random pairs then picked to perform a spontaneous performance on a given topic, the remaining contestants were really put under a lot of pressure.
The last round was the most challenging one with only three contestants left on stage. Finally, student Tian Yuhe received the most votes and was crowned the 7th SDU English Host Champion.
Except for the fierce competition, the contest brought excitement and joy to its spectators through lottery, microblog voting, and guest performances.
Three foreign judges, Mr. & Mrs. Leishman and Mr. Lawrence Phillips from the School of Foreign Language and Literature attended the competition.
"The competition was really well organized just like it was last year," said Mr. Phillips. “It was good to have a nice mix of talents. It made it much more competitive. I think Zhao Yan and Huang Jiaying were unlucky not to win, but ultimately Tian Yuhe really impressed the judges.”
