On May 31, a delegation led by Xu Xianming, President of Shandong University, visited Yale University. On behalf of President Richard C. Levin, the Vice President and Secretary of Yale University Ms. Linda Lorimer extended a warm welcome to the delegation. On behalf of Shandong University, Vice President of SDU Fan Liming, and Ms. Lorimer signed a cooperation agreement.

During their discussion, Xu gave a brief introduction to some of the characteristics and strong points of Shandong University, as a comprehensive university with a long history.
Xu pointed out that Shandong University and Yale University have a long history in cooperation and exchange. In the 1980s, Zhang Guangzhi from Yale University was appointed as honorary professor by Shandong University. Since 1995, the archaeology department of Shandong University has maintained research cooperation with the anthropology department of Yale University. These all laid foundation for today’s signing of the cooperation agreement.
Xu expressed confidence that the two universities will continue to develop and deepen cooperation after the signing of this agreement.
Ms. Lorimer introduced the history of cooperation between Yale University and China. She said the signing of the cooperation agreement between the two universities is a new milestone for Yale’s relationship with Shandong University.
Ms. Lorimer also expressed her hope that the two sides could take this opportunity to further enhance their cooperation.
In addition, the two sides both highly praised the important role that Prof. Anne P. Underhill, an archaeology professor in the anthropology department of Yale University, played in the cooperation. She received the China Friendship Award in 2008 and has a long relationship with Shandong University.

Under the cooperation agreement, the two universities will carry out exchanges for students and teachers, and conduct cooperation in field archaeology and laboratory research to promote joint training, exchange of lessons, collaborative scientific research and so forth.
Ms. Wang Fawn, Assistant Secretary of International Affairs of Yale University, scholars from the anthropology department at Yale University, Kong Lingdong, Director of Developing and Planning Department of SDU, Fang Hui, Director of the Personnel Department of SDU and Dean of the Institute of Cultural Heritage of SDU, and Tong Guangwu, Director of the International Office of SDU, also attended the activities.
