On July 11th, South Australian State Premier Jay Weatherill and Australian Ambassador to China Frances Adamson led a delegation to visit SDU. Lou Hongxiang, the Vice President of SDU, met with them.
On behalf of Xu Xianming, the President of SDU, Lou welcomed the delegation and gave a short introduction of SDU and its academic strengths. He also introduced the cooperation between SDU and various universities of Australia, such as the University of Adelaide in student exchange, teacher exchange, and scientific research.
Lou hopes that, with the help of Weatherill and Adamson, SDU can make contributions to strengthen the cooperation and friendship between Shandong and South Australia, and to strengthen the both sides economically and socially, and most especially, in education.
Weatherill said he greatly values of the friendship between South Australia and Shandong and welcomes Chinese students to study and train in South Australia. He wishes to further the cooperation between universities on both sides and create more opportunities through platforms such as the Confucius Institute and cooperative forums on scientific research.
Adamson mentioned that there is a long history of cooperation between China and Australia, especially in education. Though there are, so far, many more Chinese students who have gone to Australia than Australian students who have come to China, Adamson believes that more and more Australians will come to China to study in the future, especially using Chinese to study.
Dr. Alfred Huang, the South Australian Government Special Envoy to China, Nigel Relph, Vice President of University of South Australia, Dean Forbes, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Flinders University, and Joanne Barker, the Director of international Office at the University of Adelaide, were also in the delegation that visited SDU.
Liu Yuan, Deputy Director-General of Shandong Foreign Affairs Office, Tong Guangwu, the Director of the International Office of SDU, Fang Hui, Dean of Institute for Cultural Heritage of SDU, Wang Junju, Dean of School of Foreign Languages and Literature of SDU, Lou Fenglan, Dean of School of Nursing of SDU, and representatives from School of Physics of SDU attended the meeting.
The delegation also paid a visit to the Chinese Cultural Experiences Hall, accompanied by Ning Jiming, Dean of College of International Education of SDU.
South Australia is a state in the southern central part of Australia. It established sisterhood relationship with Shandong Province on April 3rd, 1986. The University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia are three famous Universities located in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. The University of Adelaide, a sister university of SDU, signed a cooperation assignment in November 1985 and established the Confucius Institute at the University of Adelaide in 2007. SDU and Flinders University are also cooperating in the fields of nursing and archaeology.
