On September 3rd, the opening ceremony of the 18th International Conference on Ion Beam Modifications of Materials (IBMM) was held in Qingdao. Li Qun, standing member of CPC Shandong Provincial Committee and Secretary of the CPC Qingdao Municipal Committee, Xu Xianming, President of Shandong University, Ji Peiwen, Deputy Director of the Mathematics and Physics Division of National Natural Science Foundation of China, and Wang Keming, the Chairman of the conference, professor of Shandong University and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAC), attended and addressed the conference.

Xu Xianming, President of Shandong University, delivered a speech at the 18th IBMM, in which he first extended a warm welcome to experts and scholars from all over the world. He also gave thanks to the school’s friends from home and abroad, who had been caring for and supporting the development of Shandong University.
He mentioned that there was an inseparable historical relationship between Shandong University and Qingdao, which stood as the birthplace of the Physics Department of Shandong University. During this long history, many preeminent people stand out, including physicist Mr. Wang Pu, Mr. Shu Xingbei, and Mr. Wang Ganchang. Recently, the School of Physics at SDU has brought on Prof. Peter Grünberg, a Nobel Prize winner. Meanwhile the research team led by Prof. He Mao not only participated in but also made great contributions to experiments with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the area of particle physics. In addition, an important international academic status has been achieved in the domain of Ion implantation modifications of optical materials by the group of Prof. Wang Keming, academician of CAS.
Xu also mentioned that, with its growing ability to undertake major scientific and research projects, the physics discipline in Shandong University has become much more capable of producing world-class academic achievements and strengthened in world influence.
Xu noted that the 111th anniversary of Shandong University was only a month away. This year, the first-stage project of the construction of Qingdao Campus of Shandong University is about to begin. After two years, there will be a new, modern and beautiful campus. He expressed his hope that the 19th IBMM could be held on the Qingdao Campus of SDU, and he rated IBMM among the most significant international conferences in the field of physics. To undertake this conference is not only an acknowledgment of our achievements in the field of physics, but also a significant opportunity for further development. Shandong University will seize this opportunity and strive to make a new step forward in physics.
He hoped that all the experts and scholars will share their expertise with us and support us in developing Shandong University into a world-class university. Meanwhile, he hoped to foster closer cooperative relationship with more friends and develop together.
There were about 300 experts and scholars from home and abroad who attended the opening ceremony, including the conference honorary chair Prof. Zou Shichang, academician of CAS from Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT), along with Prof. Liu Baixin, academician of CAS from Tsinghua University, and Prof. Wang Xi, academician of CAS from SIMIT, as the co-chairs of the conference. The leaders of Qingdnao Science and Technology Bureau, and the Director of Development Planning Department of Shandong University Kong Lingdong, and Prof. Liang Zuotang, Dean of School of Physics at Shandong University, also attended the meeting.
The International Conference on Ion Beam Modifications of Materials (IBMM) is a major international forum to present and discuss recent research results and future directions in the field of ion beam and plasma-induced modification, synthesis, patterning and characterization of materials. This is the first time for IBMM to be held in China. It brought together physicists, materials scientists, ion beam specialists and those who are interested in the practical application of ion beams from all over the world. Jointly hosted by Shandong University, Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT) and Tsinghua University, this IBMM was undertaken by Shandong University. Nine plenary lectures, 67 session lectures and 249 posters were presented during the conference (from Sept. 3rd to 7th).
