Vice President of University of South Australia Visit

On September 21st, Nigel Relph, the Vice President of the University of South Australia (UniSA), Prof. Simon Beecham, the Head of the School of Natural and Built Environments, and Ms. Daisy Chen,Manager of China Office of UniSA visited SDU. Lou Hongxiang, the Vice President of SDU, met with the guests.

During the meeting, Lou first reviewed the effort of jointly establishing Health Research Centre by the two universities, which was launched after Lou’ first meeting with Nigel Relph in July this year, and then Lou affirmed the great progress that the two universities have made thus far. Lou also introduced all the subjects of Medical Science of SDU and brought up suggestions for a framework and content for the construction of the Health Research Centre. Lou expressed that both parties should work with each other in the joint training of doctoral students, exchange visits of scholars and joint research etc. by utilizing a platform such as the Health Research Centre.

Nigel Relph stated that they will dispatch a delegation to SDU as soon as possible consisting of professors of UniSA to make sure the area and details of the collaboration are up to standards, then UniSA will sign a Memorandum of Cooperation with SDU. UniSA plans to win more support by utilizing the friendship province/state relationship between Shandong and South Australia.

Directors of International Affairs Office, School of Public Health and School of Pharmaceutical Sciences attended the meeting and conducted a discussion of the details of establishing the Health Research Centre. Prof. Simon Beecham had a discussion with the scholars of School of Environmental Science and Engineering.

University of South Australia was founded in 1991 through the amalgamation of the South Australian Institute of Technology and the Magill, Salisbury and Underdale campuses of the South Australian College of Advanced Education. Now it is the largest university in South Australia. There are 36,000 students studying at UniSA, among which 14,000 students are international students from 90 countries. UniSA is divided into four broad sectors namely the Division of Business, Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences, Division of Health Sciences and Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment. The Division of Health Sciences consisted of 3 schools (schools of Health Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy and Medical Sciences) and the Sansom Institute for Health Research. According to 2011 QS World University Rankings, the overall ranking of UniSA is 11th in Australia.
