Significant Progress in Research for Aeroacoustic Noise for High-Speed Face Milling Cutters at SDU
Date and Time: 2012-09-26 08:26:39

Recently, Prof. Liu Zhanqiang’s research group of Key Laboratory of High Efficiency and Clean Mechanical Manufacture at Shandong University has made significant progress into the research of aeroacoustic noise for high-speed face milling cutters and reported their findings in the paper “Numerical Analysis of Aeroacoustic Noise for High-speed Face Milling Cutters in Three Dimensional Unsteady Flow Fields”. Doctoral candidate Ji Chunhui is the first author, and Prof. Liu Zhanqiang is the corresponding author of this paper. The paper has been published in the top flight journal in the field of mechanical engineering-《ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering》.

The paper first establishes the mathematical model for the prediction of aeroacoustic noise for high-speed face milling cutters. The influence of geometric structure parameters of cutters on the aeroacoustic noise was then revealed. The research has laid a solid foundation for the design of high-speed and low aeroacoustic noise face milling cutters. The paper was ranked in the Top 10 Downloaded Articles of this journal for two consecutive months, July and August. The research was supported by the NSFC (Natural Science Foundation of China). The related research achievements have also been published on 《SCIENCE CHINA Technological Sciences》、《Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering》and《Chinese Science Bulletin》.

Velocity and pressure distribution on the surface of cutter

Prof. Liu Zhanqiang’s research group mainly focuses on the study of tool cutting theory and cutting-tool technology. The group has made significant progress in the fields of high speed and high efficiency machining and micro cutting in recent years. Several high-level papers have been published in such famous journals as 《ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering》、《International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture》、《Journal of Materials Processing Technology》、《The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology》、《Wear》、《SCIENCE CHINA Technological Sciences》 and 《Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering》. What is more, 8 national invention patents have been awarded to the group. Prof. Liu Zhanqiang has undertaken and coordinated more than 20 longitudinal research projects as responsible person. The projects include 4 projects supported by the NSFC, 1 project supported by National Key Basic Research Program (973), 1 project supported by the National Support Plan, 1 project supported by the Foundation of Shandong Province of China for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 project supported by the Program for New Century Excellent Talents, 1 project supported by the Fok Ying-Tong Education Foundation for Young Teachers in the Higher Education Institutions of China, and 1 project supported by the Key Program for Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province. As chief of the project cooperation unit, Prof. Liu Zhanqiang has participated in the project supported by the State Key Program of National Natural Science of China, the project supported by the Joint Research Fund for Overseas Natural Science of China, the project supported by the Major Science and Technology Program of High-end CNC Machine Tools and Basic Manufacturing Equipment, the project supported by the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863), and the project supported by the National Support Plan, etc.
