Recently, the Vice President of Shandong University Chen Yan went to Canada to attend the second annual China-Canada Liberal Arts Education Forum hosted by China Education Association for International Exchange. He also visited the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States of America, and the Inter American University of Puerto Rico.
Mount Allison University in Canada hosted the second annual China-Canada Liberal Arts Education Forum from September 25th to 27th. Chen made a keynote speech and answered questions from Canadian representatives about the status and development idea of liberal arts education in China.
The forum aimed to encourage communication and future cooperation in the fields of liberal arts education between the two countries. Zhang Lanchun, Minister Counselor of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Canada, attended the forum and delivered a welcoming address. The following also attended the forum: Chinese representatives from the Education Office of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Canada, representatives from 13 Chinese universities including Shandong University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Harbin Institute of Technology, Sichuan University, as well as over 70 Canadian representatives from 19 universities and institutions.
Before attending the forum, the Chinese delegation visited the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). They exchanged ideas over the system and curriculum design of the liberal arts and sciences for American undergraduate education and discussed several problems in developing liberal arts education in China. The delegation also held talks with Fang Maotian, Minister Counselor of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the United State of America. They then visited the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, listening to an introduction from the president about the university and their liberal arts education curriculum. They also visited the university museum.
