On the morning of October 10th, the unveiling ceremony for the bronze statue of Professor Sun Hongquan was held on the Baotuquan Campus as one of a series of activities to celebrate the 111th anniversary of Shandong University.
Prof. Sun was one of the most famous pioneers and founders of ENT (ear-nose-throat) science in our country.
Zhang Yun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Vice President of SDU, gave a speech during the ceremony. He also awarded the certificate on behalf of Shandong University to Prof. Zou Mingshun for his donation to the school. Prof. Zou was an alumni representative and professor of the former Shanghai Medical University.
On behalf of SDU, Zhang Yun expressed his admiration and gratitude to the ENT major alumni of the class of 1953 who donated the bronze statue, in honor and appreciation of their Alma Mater and teachers. Prof. Zhang Yun recounted the brilliant life of Prof. Sun Hongquan, which was characterized by the continuous pursuit of medical knowledge and good medical ethics. Prof. Zhang also spoke highly of the great contributions to China and SDU medical disciplines made by Prof. Sun.
Prof. Zhang said that this unveiling ceremony is a reminder of our respect for the older generation of scientists. He also said that this could inspire current and future generations in SDU medical fields. We must make a conscious effort to carry on the selfless tradition and medical excellence embodied in Professor Sun Hongquan. Thus the medical school will continue to help build SDU into a world-class university.

Neurosurgery Specialist Li Xingang, who is the Director of the Qilu Hospital of SDU, expressed his great respect for Prof. Sun. He said that Prof. Sun was a leading authority in medical field, who was rigorous in studying and always tried to make innovations. He stated that to have Prof. Sun Hongquan’s bronze statue on campus was a symbol of inheriting traditional culture. To inherit Sun’s spirit and to develop the career he started would inspire students to gain more achievements in medical field.
Prof. Pan Xinliang, Director of the ENT Department of Qilu Hospital, recalled Prof. Sun’s great contribution to the field of medicine. He spoke highly of Prof. Sun’s noble deeds, and considers him a model for doctors and teachers.

Prof. Zou Mingshun, the student of Prof. Sun Hongquan, is nearly 80 years old. He represented the Class of 1953 ENT major in giving a speech to express how much they miss their teacher and their gratitude.
Mr. Sun Jingzhong, the son of Prof. Sun and the Director of Clinical Department of the former Medical School of SDU, expressed that the statue of his father standing on this campus together with statues of Li Shizhen and Norman Bethune was the best recognition for his father. He also stressed that as a medical worker, he would devote his whole life to the medicine.
At the scene of ceremony, Zhang Yun and Li Xingang unveiled the bronze statue of Prof. Sun Hongquan together. All people present bowed to the bronze statue to express their respect and memory of Prof. Sun. Members of the medical school’s leaders, relatives and friend of Prof. Sun, and the ENT major alumni of the class of 1953 from all over China to attend the ceremony.
