Rector of Tel Aviv University Aron Shai Visits

On November 7th, Xu Xianming, President of SDU, met with a delegation led by Aron Shai, Rector of Tel Aviv University from Israel, in the VIP room of Run Runshaw Science Building on the Centre Campus. Lou Hongxiang, the Vice President of SDU, attended the meeting and relevant activities.

Xu welcomed Aron Shai’s visit to SDU and reviewed the cooperation between the two universities since the intercollegiate cooperation agreement was signed. He said that at present, our two universities have a close academic relationship in the area of humanities, especially in the research of Judaism and East Asian Studies. He hoped that the two universities can expend and deepen their cooperation and explore possible future cooperation in the areas of science. Aron Shai said that he was very happy to visit Shandong University again. He agreed with the idea of developing the scientific collaborative projects on the basis of cooperation between professors, and to further promote all-round cooperation between the two universities.

Professor Fu Youde, Director of Center For Judaic and Inter-Religious Studies of Shandong University, Professor Liu Jie, Dean of SDU Philosophy and Social Development School, Zou Nan, Director of SDU International Affairs Department, and Professor Zhang Ping from the Tel Aviv University, attended the meeting and relevant activities. After the meeting, Professor Aron Shai gave a lecture to students of Shandong University, which was named “Tradition and Modernity: A Sino-Israeli Dialogue”.

Professor Aron Shai is the Rector of Tel-Aviv University, Israel. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford, St. Antony's College in 1972. He is the founder and the first Chairman of the Department of East Asian Studies. He has authored numerous academic books on China’s modern history published in England, the United States, China and Israel, including Twentieth Century China, Ministry of Defence (1998), Sino-Israeli Relations: Current Reality and Future Prospects (2009), The Biography of Zhang Xue-liang, The General who Never Fought (2008), and so on.

Established in 1956, Tel Aviv University takes pride in the high-quality of its teaching and research activities, in the life sciences and medicine, in the exact sciences and engineering, the social sciences, law, management, the humanities, in education and the arts. The office of Chinese language council international (Hanban) signed the agreement for the establishing of Confucius Institute with Tel Aviv University on May 28th 2007. The Confucius Institute at Tel Aviv University is the first Confucius Institute established in Israel and its Chinese courses started On November 2007. In addition, SDU and Tel Aviv University signed a cooperation agreement in May of 2010 and have since developed programs of joint training of doctoral students and cooperative scientific research.
