On March 25th, the opening ceremony of Study China Programme Easter 2013 was held at Shandong University. Forty-nine students selected from 28 prestigious universities such as Oxford University, Southampton University, Birmingham University, Edinburgh University, London’s Global University, Exeter University, and SDU’s sister schools—Durham University and Manchester University, all attended the ceremony and will have a 20-day training class.
During their stay in Shandong University, apart from receiving language training in Chinese and experiencing traditional Chinese culture through lectures and activities, the British students will also take courses concerning the Chinese economy and contemporary China taught by Chinese professors and will visit corporations and social institutions relevant to their courses. Volunteers from Shandong University will offer one-on-one help to the students in the programme during exchange activities.
During the opening ceremony, Tong Guangwu, General Counselor of International Affairs of SDU, delivered a speech to welcome the arrival of the students, expressing his hope that the students in this programme can learn about the Chinese language, learn from specialized courses and make friends with SDU students. Luke Heselwood from the University of Manchester delivered a speech on behalf of the British students, hoping that they can value this opportunity and learn deeply about Chinese culture in order to prepare for their future studies and careers. Professor Zhang Yanqiang, the representative of SDU teachers, and Alexander Fitzgerald, the representative of the British students, also delivered speeches.
The British Students Study China Programme, which has been held for four times at SDU, was launched and has been financed by the UK government from 2007 to enhance language skills and provide an insight into Chinese business relations and economy.
