Professor Thomas F. Kuech from University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison), Professor Kei May Lau from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Dr. Li Kening, a partner of Pinsent Masons, visited Shandong University from February 16th to 18th. On the morning of 17th, Zhang Rong, President of SDU, met with the guests and attended the corresponding symposium. Wang Qilong, Senior Vice President of SDU, and Lou Hongxiang, Vice President of SDU, also attended the meeting.
Zhang Rong reminisced about his previous collaboration with Professor Thomas Keuch and Professor Kei Lau. He expressed his hope that the two professors will seek opportunities for cooperation between their universities and SDU as well as bring us the latest academic information.
During the talk, Zhang highlighted the academic characteristics of SDU, emphasizing some of SDU’s strongest subjects, and exchanged ideas with the guests about issues such as departmental development and personnel training. He expressed his desire that, on the basis of current academic cooperation and talents exchange, SDU can establish frequent and large scale collaborative projects with University of Wisconsin and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Combining the practical experience of UW-Madison and the development trend of global higher education, professor Keuch made some suggestions to SDU in matters of educating students, cooperative research, commercialization of research findings, and social service.
During the meeting, Wang Qilong introduced the planning and construction of SDU at Qingdao.
During the visit, Professor Kuech and Professor Kei May Lau discussed matters about cooperation with related officials of Institute of Crystal Materials Shandong University, visited Shandong Inspur Huaguang Optoelectronics Co, Ltd., learnt about the industry-university-research development situation of SDU and gave an academic lecture to the Institute of Crystal Materials and students form the School of Physics. Dr. Li Kening also visited the School of Law. Afterwards, the delegation also went to the construction site of SDU at Qingtao.
Related officials from SDU’s General Administration Office, SDU’s Department of International Affairs and SDU Institute of Ctystal Materials attended the meeting.
Thomas Kuech is now the Academician of the National Academy of Engineering, USA and a professor in Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at UW-Madison. He received the Ph.D. Degree in Applied Physics from California Institute of Technology in 1981.
Kei May Lau is now a professor in Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at HKUST and received the Ph.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in 1981.
