On September 5 and 6, 11,920 new students brimming with curiosity, hopes, and smiles enrolled at Shandong University and embarked on a new phase in their academic lives. During registration, enthusiastic staff and volunteers, who had undertaken considerable advance preparations, earnestly assisted everyone and ensured all immediately felt at home.

The new students regarded everything at Shandong University as novel and interesting and were intrigued by the warmth of their teachers and schoolmates, the plentiful services, the intoxicating campus scenery, and the long history of the university, including its wealth of cultural treasures. The students eagerly anticipated academic lives and experiences of SDU.

"I received my bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree at SDU, and it seems that I will spend another four years here to get my doctoral degree. I am used to studying at SDU and witnessed many changes to the university during my previous seven years. In the next phase, I will focus more on my academic research and try my best to expand my research skills and practical ability,” Qu Xiaohang, a new doctoral candidate from the School of Energy and Power Engineering, said.

"I’m a native of Jinan, and many of my family members graduated from Shandong University, so I have learned a lot about the university and especially like its academic atmosphere. I chose to study at SDU as a part of a family tradition. The new college life is waiting for me, and I will bravely meet the new challenges,” Liu Xinyi, a freshman from the School of Physical Education, remarked.

“I earned my bachelor’s degree at Ludong University and was very excited to be admitted by SDU as a postgraduate. It’s a big step for me to have this opportunity to further my studies at this prestigious university,” exclaimed Chen Xiaoguang, a new postgraduate from the School of Civil Engineering.

"I knew a bit about SDU before, especially that its ranking in China is quite good. My parents are also satisfied with my admission into this university. The new term is coming, and although I have no plans at present, I will not idle away my university life,” Hao Yunzhi, a freshman from the School of Computer Science and Technology, resolved.

My home is located in the plains and the Xinglongshan Campus is surrounded on three sides by mountains, but I like it because it’s a different experience. SDU is a distinguished university with a long history. I was so excited when I arrived here. As the saying goes, ‘Well begun is half done.’ I hope I can lead a happy and full life here,” yearned Wang Cong, a freshman from the School of Management.

"Before coming I joined my school’s QQ group for new students and gained a lot of information. We were told that we are going to take English and Physics tests after we are enrolled, so I made some preparations. Hongjialou Campus is beautiful and I have decided that I am going to read aloud every morning,” Cui Hanhua, a freshman from the School of Physics, affirmed.

"Since signing in, I have gotten along well with the seniors of the school’s students’ union who are so warm and friendly. I have become a volunteer and welcome the new students. I am going to join the students' union and gain some experiences,” Ji Yuting from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering commented.

"The beautiful scenery of the campus attracted me so much. I had heard that it’s a great university before I left home. Although my home is far away from here, I am going to study hard,” Wang Xinyuan from the School of Political Science and Public Administration pledged. Her parents hope that she will study and live happily and realize her dreams.

"The university is just as I dreamed. It is warm and beautiful, and its academic life is colorful. I have only touched a little of this university, but I will experience more,” Zhang Yunjie from the School of Medicine anticipated.

"I came to SDU in 2008, and I have lots of feelings when I think about the years I have spent at SDU. I feel the energy of youth when I see the new students,” Huang Boshi, a doctoral candidate from the School of Pharmacy, reflected.

"I have had a special relationship with SDU since I was very young. I hope I can make more friends and achieve something worthwhile,” proclaimed Liu Anna from the School of Materials Science and Engineering. “My daughter's cousin graduated from Shandong University and she has always dreamed about studying here,” Liu’s mother commented. “She is very excited to be a student of Shandong University and I just hope that she will study happily.”

"I am an exchange student and I came to SDU to learn more about China. I think SDU has many attributes. Although I haven’t got used to my new life in a foreign country, I hope that I can make friends and study here. What’s more, I want a Chinese name, and I need some suggestions,” Meshcheryakov Fedor, an exchange student from Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, hinted.

"I just arrived, and I think Jinan is big and prosperous. I came to Shandong University to learn Chinese and I will be a good student. I want to introduce my hometown special cuisine, Jellof Rice, to everyone,” Aliyu Tnaye Audu, a Nigerian student from the College of International Education, asserted.

"In fact, I have been here for four years and am not a freshman. I have experienced a lot here. I trust that I will have gained the necessary abilities by the time I step into society,” Yan Xin from the School of Medical Engineering proclaimed.

"I want to dedicate most of my time to studying and improving my social communication,” Duan Luxian, from the School of Philosophy and Social Development avowed.

"I came to SDU with my family from Gansu Province. It’s a beautiful campus. I hope that I can immerse myself in my studies,” Chen Zhipeng from the School of Economics declared.

"I was familiar with the school before. When I stepped onto the campus, I found the atmosphere to be great,” Lu Baotong from the School of Software said. His father commented, “It’s his choice and I just hope that he can learn something and contribute to society.” His younger brother added, “My brother is my model and I will become a man like him.”

"I have helped teachers and classmates welcome the new students. With respect to my major, I think the environment science has a vast space to develop in future,” predicted Zhang Bei from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering.

As the students stepped onto the campus, their new lives began. SDU will give them much, but they will ultimately be responsible for finding answers to all their questions during their academic journeys
