SDU Expands the Cooperation with France, Britain and Austria

Recently, Shandong University President Zhang Rong led a delegation to visit universities and institutions in France, Britain and Austria to expand exchange and cooperation in the areas of humanities. SDU Vice President Chen Yan visit together.

During his visit to Université Paris 1, Zhang Rong and Philippe Boutry, President of Université Paris 1, agreed that the two universities should establish close ties in the fields of history, economics, laws and archaeology and immediately carry out short-term students exchange programs, as well as actively promote joint-training doctoral program in the field of humanities.

During Chen Yan’s visit, he met with President Manuelle Frank and Vice President Christine Lamarre of Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO). They reviewed the two schools’ history of exchange in the field of humanities, and said that both sides should create opportunities for more exchange, especially the sinological research, and carry out exchange and partnership in academic research, and the joint training of master and undergraduate students.

At the University of Vienna in Austria, Chan Yan had a discussion with Susanne Weiglin-Schwiedrzik, President of University of Vienna, and officials from its Institution of East Asian Studies, Institution of Numismatics Studies, Faculty of Sinology Studies and Confucius Institute. The two sides said that the two universities should start student and teacher exchange as soon as possible in the fields of archaeology and sinology. Moreover, Chan Yan and Fang Hui, Dean of SDU’s History and Culture School, gave two academic reports in Vienna University’s Faculty of Sinology and Faculty of Archaeology.

During the delegates’ trip, they also visited the Education Office of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the French Republic, the Permanent Delegation of the People's Republic of China to UNESCO, Education Section of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Ma Yansheng, Minister, Education Counselor of Embassy of China in France, Zhang Xiuqin, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Permanent Delegation of China to UNESCO, and Shen Tang, Education Counselor of Embassy of China in Britain, had a talk with the delegation. They expressed their hope that Shandong University would cooperate with colleges and universities in France and Britain in research projects, joint running of schools, and alumni association as well as the recruiting of overseas talents and establishment of Confucius Institutes. They also said SDU should combine good policies on the high-level humanity exchange mechanisms of China-France and China-British and carry out meaningful cooperative projects.

Officials from SDU’s Graduates Affairs Department, International Affairs Department, History and Culture School and Classical Literature Research Institute also attended the visit.

To expand partner schools of A Project on Global Collection and Compilation of Chinese Ancient Books, Shandong University has sent delegations to University of Cambridge, School of Oriental And African Studies, Needham Research Institute and other units to develop work, actively promote humanities research famous universities and institutions in the UK, France, the USA and Japan, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan to join in this project.
