On April 1, SDU President Zhang Rong led a delegation to visit the University of Malaya (UM), Malasia. He met with its president Mohd Amin Jalaludin, and signed the Memo of SDU-UM Academic Cooperation and Agreement of SDU-UM Student Exchange.

During the meeting, Jalaludin introduced UM’s history, discipline characteristics, scientific research and academic reputation, and expressed his expectation of further cooperation with SDU in students and teachers exchange programs as well as in scientific research. Zhang, on his part, made a full introduction to SDU’s history, discipline characteristics, international exchanges and cultivation of students. He also had an in-depth discussion with responsible staff from UM’s Faculty of Science, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Faculty of Economics and Administration, and the International Relations Unit regarding issues such as exchanges of teachers and students, sharing of academic resources, and research cooperation, etc. Both sides agreed on exerting the advantages of each other, conducting exchanges and putting the cooperative programs into action as soon as possible.

The meeting was followed by a signing ceremony, in which Zhang and Jalaludin signed the Memo of SDU-UM Academic Cooperation and Agreement of SDU-UM Student Exchange. According to the agreements, the two universities will conduct cooperation in student exchange, staff reciprocal visits, research, publication, as well as communication and sharing of academic resources.

Before visiting UM, Zhang met with Huang Huikang, Chinese ambassador to Malaysia. They exchanged ideas about Malaysia’s social, economic, and educational development, its cooperation with China, and international cooperation of China’s “Belt and Road Initiative”. Zhang sought advice from the ambassador on the exchange and cooperation programs between SDU and Malaysia. He also hoped that the embassy could support SDU’s work to raise its popularity in Malaysia, and support the international student recruitment and cooperation between the universities.

The oldest university in Malaysia, University of Malaya is a comprehensive university with arts, sciences and medicine. It had its root with King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College established in 1905 and 1928 respectively. King Edward VII College of Medicine cultivated medical talents and Raffles College nurtured educational ones. There are 12 faculties, 2 academies and 3 Centres, with more than 25,000 students and over 2,800 teachers (including 772 foreign teachers). The University of Malaysia has doctorate programs in collaboration with the University of Sydney, University of Melbourne and University of Nottingham. In 2016, it ranked No.146 in the QS World University Rankings.
